Think Tank 2022 Public Lecture Series on “Nation and Peace Building in Timor-Leste”

The Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste, also known as East Timor, is the new-born country in the 21st Century. It lies 400 km North of Australia across the Timor Sea and in the Lesser Sunda Islands at the Eastern Indonesian archipelago. Timor-Leste comprises the eastern half of the Timor Island, the separate Enclave of Oecussi situating in West Timor, and the small offshore islands of Atauro and Jaco.
On May 20, 2002, the Independence of Timor-Leste was restored, and the UN handed power to the first constitutional Government of the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste. Although the independence was restored, the country went through several phases of both internal and external reconciliations. Until December 2012, Timor-Leste, as a member of the community of states, has entered a new stage of nation-building following the withdrawal of the United Nations peacekeepers.
